CCPOA Attack on Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer:
CCSO State President Gonzales was asked to comment on the recent CCPOA video wherein a bullseye was shown over Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer’s face.
“I am appalled at the video released by the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) featuring a bullseye on the face of Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer. While I have served as the State President of the California Correctional Supervisors Organization, I have never once dreamt of a scenario where my members or I would harass or threaten a public official. This tactic to intimidate Mr. Jones-Sawyer is horrible and should be condemned by all law enforcement officials. The leadership of CCPOA, starting with its State President, should be held accountable for participating in the video and suggesting a ‘hit’ on a State Legislator – this is inciteful and borders a racist call-to-action. At the very least, an apology to the Assemblymember is due.”
Attorney Appreciation:
JR Oviedo Law Group recently concluded a case stemming from 2016. The outcome was favorable for the CCSO member, and we received the following update:
“As you are aware, we won the defendant’s case after oral argument before the State Personnel Board. Aside from my client, only one other supervisor was returned to service by the SPB. In that case, the attorney, with my permission, used my trial and appellate brief in support of his client’s cause. The SPB modified that supervisor’s penalty from dismissal to a 12-month suspension.
Today, the CDCR agreed to dismiss its Administrative Writ of Mandamus in exchange for modifying my client’s penalty from a 6-month suspension to a 10-month suspension. It was a deal that made sense, considering my client really needs to get back to work. Moreover, the SPB decided the case in July 2020, and my client will get back pay until October 18, 2020. Thus the additional four months demanded by the CDCR was basically a wash. This has been a long road for my client as the underlying case began in August 2016. My client was very grateful for CCSO’s support throughout this time and would likely be willing to share the story to garner more support and membership for CCSO.”
DVI Closure:
CCSO was notified that Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI) would be closed by September 2021. Former California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Secretary Ralph Diaz personally informed DVI management of the closure on the morning of September 25, 2020. CCSO has been in contact with CDCR’s Office of Labor Relations (OLR), who informed CCSO of its plan to ensure every DVI employee has a job placement option at facilities within a 100-mile radius. As a result of the planned closure, CDCR will initiate a hiring freeze at all CDCR facilities that fall within the 100-mile radius in order to accommodate displaced staff. CCSO will continue to monitor this unfortunate situation and will keep in contact with DVI members. We will maintain communications with OLR in order to assist with a smooth transition for all of our members to other facilities in the area. DVI was the second prison to join CCSO as a chapter, making it one of the original founding institutions of our organization. CCSO is saddened by this closure but will be working fervently to mitigate the impact to our DVI members.
State Board Meeting:
CCSO held its Quarterly State Board meeting on October 16, 2020, at the CCSO main office. In an effort to find some resolve, the State Board of Directors discussed closures, transfers, teleworking and the possible loss of a PDD day. State President Gonzales provided updates on the 5-day injunction as well as the parity writ, also discussed were administrative changes within CDCR and moving forward in these challenging times. On a high note, CDCR Labor proposed a draft for annual STB contributions, which is a huge positive for the CCSO membership.
